Michelle Vanatz

A first-floor resident of the McAllistor Building, identified from the building floorplan (Session 4). Shares the floor with Lewis Post. (Name as rendered on the plan — spelling unconfirmed.)

Session 5: Gus and Kip knocked; no answer. She appears as a speaking character in The Smoking Lounge Play, present in the fourth-floor smoking lounge, hostile to Mark Roark ("no one likes you") and asserting Abigail "ran off with that salesman."

Found — Asleep (Session 5)

The team picked the lock and entered. Books on every wall. Michelle lay asleep and unwakeable, though breathing (Mordant checked her pulse). By the bed: sleeping pills and a copy of The Bell Jar. Her fridge held only expired food.

Body Here, Mind in the Play
She is **simultaneously** asleep in her apartment and a **live character in The Smoking Lounge Play.** Her body is the anchor; her mind is **upstairs in the night floors.** The pills + *The Bell Jar* read as a **deliberate descent** (the novel's overdose), echoing how the other tenants **enact** the works they're fused to. She isn't a witness to question — she's a **sleeper** to be (carefully) woken, if she can be.

Her room also held an Antique Tomahawk and The Red Book — the 1951 English King in Yellow with the Yellow Sign on its cover. "Reading the play is enough to open the victim to the ministrations of the King in Yellow." Michelle read it; Michelle is asleep upstairs. The book is the mechanism of her condition.
